[U.S.S Serenity] The Search for Simmo (Mission 8)

The USS Serenity picked up Commodore Simmo and left for Jupiter Station to prepare for the launch and testing of the USS Freedom. The crew investigate and help to fix small problems on the Freedom and then prepare for the propulsion tests. An intruder onboard, assuming the forms of various crewmembers, causes trouble, but eventually is killed. The Freedom departs on shakedown tests. The Serenity is ordered on an urgent mission to investigate a quantum filament, forcing them to leave many crewmen behind. The Serenity arrives at the filament, and tries to transport material out, blowing all transporter circuitry. Commodore Simmo proceeds out in a shuttle to pick up the material, but suddenly disappears, and there is no trace.................. And now the continuation.......... <USS Serenity, Bridge> Kim: I've lost the shuttle sir. Scooter: *Pauses* Lost it? Kim: It just... vanished. Scooter: Vanished? How's that possible. Kim: I don't know. The rest of the bridge crew turn around and look at Kim at ops. Kim: He's..................... gone. There is a moment of silence, but is suddenly interrupted by Kim's console beeping. Kim: Commander, we're getting a message from Jupiter Station. Scooter: On screen. An image of Lt. Obiko appeared on screen. Obiko: Commander. Scooter: Ah, Lieutenant. What is it? Obiko: We've got some bad news here. Scooter: It can't be worse than what's happened here. Obiko: The Freedom has disappeared. Scooter: What? How's that possible? Obiko: We dont know. Scooter: The captain has just disappeared aswell. We dont know how either. Obiko: Oh no. Scooter: We'll be staying here to investigate. Obiko: Understood, good luck. The comm closed. The filament could be seen just fading from view, about to vanish. FliX: Sir, I've got all readings I can from the filament. Wait, it's gone sir. Scooter: Any sign of any debris from a shuttle. FliX: No sir, I'm sorry. Kim: He's gone isn't he. Daniels: Bye sir. Scooter: The captain's not gone yet. Everyone, I want detailed reports from all of you about the situation, ASAP. Get to work. I'll be in the ready room. Scooter leaves the bridge entering the ready room. The bridge crew continue work. <Meanwhile, down in Engineering> LTJG Underhill (NPC): Jeez this ship is a wreck, that explosion in the transporter systems has knocked auxillary power relays out and backup systems are offline. Sporto: Well, we'd better get to work. Underhill: This is going to be hard, we left a lot of people at Jupiter Station. Sporto: I know. Let's get to work. OFF: Let the story continue...! What was left of it anyways. Scooter looked across the room. Lt. JG Kim, Commander Sporto, Lt. Daniels (now one of the only 2 helmsmen left on board), Lt. Manhunter, and Lt. JG Flix looked back at him, as they always did. Simmo and Obiko were the ones absent, Obiko back on Jupiter station and Simmo who knows where. Filling in for Obiko was the Assistant Chief Medical Officer, Throp, a Denobulan known for his expert medical skills as well for his excitement at learning new things.* *Scooter began* Scooter: "Alright, for the time being, I'm making myself acting Captain, which means I need a first officer. Sporto, since you're third in command of the Serenity, I'm making you acting first officer for the time being. Of course, you'll still be doing your regular duties as well." Sporto: "Yes sir, I'll handle it just fine." Scooter: "Good. Our objective is to find out what happened to Simmo, but we can't do that efficiently while we're damaged. For that reason, I want to hear the damage report first. Commander, would you please?" Sporto: "Yes. When we tried to transport the string material on board, we didn't have the targeting scanners aligned exactly as we needed. The material went into the pattern buffer in an unstable state, thereby causeing a power surge which knocked out every transporter on the ship, except of course for on our shuttles. To fix the transporters, we'll have to replace the entire pattern buffer and asscociated connecting conduits in every transporter room. The only problem is while we have more than enough spare conduits and circuits, we only have one spare pattern buffer on board, which means we'll have extremely reduced tranporter capabilities." Scooter: "Well some is better than none." Kim: "What about the shuttles? Can we use their buffers?" Sporto: "It's a possibility. It'll take some time, but I'll see if I can do anything." Scooter: "What about other damage?" Sporto: "Well, it appears that the string overloaded the long range sensors and the delflector dish. The deflector dish should only take a couple of hours to fix, but the long range sensors have massive damage. I'm not sure how long it will take to fix them, or IF we can fix them without a drydock. Even if we do get them fixed, they'll be operating at an extremely low resolution. Other than that, the damage is pretty light. There is some minor buckling of the hull on deck 6 as well as some power fluctuations from the core, but I've got people working on it right now. Both should be back to normal in an hour or two." Scooter: "Ok, that's not too bad, just make the transporter your priority. If any rescue operation of Simmo's is to be made, we'll need the transporter." Sporto: "There's one more thing sir. As you know, we left a good chunk of our crew on Jupiter station. That chunk included 7 of my staff, which leaves us with 5 engineers, including myself. I need some more people, otherwise, repairs will take days instead of hours, weeks instead of days." Scooter: "No problem. Kim, loan Sporto a couple of your staff. I know you're short-handed as well, but the repairs take priority." Kim: "Yes sir." Scooter: "Okay, now that we've heard the damage report, let's hear each of your status reports." OFF: Tag. B'lenna Torres apears on screen BLT: Hello, sir Sporto: Hello, we are quite busy at the moment BLT: Can I talk to Simmo please Sporto: Sorry he has disapeard we are currently on a search and rescue mission BLT: Ok, I have even more bad news for you then.... at 9.07pm (3 days later) today the USS Freedom broke from our contact. All connections have been lost. And taht was 5 hours ago. Regi and Tuvok were on that. I will find them. No matter what. I am sending data to you now about it take a lookl if you can. Also we have not had any Subspace terrawave yet, so we don't know if it crashed. Sporto: Thank, so sorry to hear, we will be back and could take a look at the problem them... Sernety out after a minute of silence Sporto: Kim, look at that data Kim: Wont an engineer have to? Sporto: No, I am telling you to look at it. Your as good as any engineer as you have proven. Kim: Aye... he reads a little of it to himself The ship reached Advance Warp 3.85031. There they went steady for 2.7 minutes then a cascade reaction in the navigation realy exploded and we lost contact... they were in the Gamma Quadrant. - BLT Kim: Please, be ok.... He dipped his finger in the lukewarm coffee and stirred it around a bit. Around him people were buzzing around like bees, trying to figure out what happened to the Freedom. This was not a very good week for Logalot, he had just been assigned to the U.S.S. Serenity when he was left at Jupiter Station. Now, the Serenity has been damaged rather thouroughly, and he is not there to help repair it. Out of frustration he slammed his fist on the table. An officer Logalot recognised from the Serenity noticed him. Logalot: Grrr! I need to do something! Officer: Frustrated? Logalot: Well, yes. Officer: Heh, I'm stuck here too, and there's nothing I can do about it either. I'm Lt. Obiko Dozen-Handed, I think I've seen you on the ship before, who are you? Logalot: Lt. Logalot Avernite, I was eh, just assigned to the Serenity... Obiko: Where were you before? Logalot: Utopia Planita, When I was promoted they told me I was ready to be on a starship. Obiko: You weren't ready after the acadamy? Logalot: Well, an admiral's son was there when I went, he was in my year. He had been using some, well... inappropriate holodeck material, and when he was cought, I got blamed. Obiko: What did they do to you? Logalot: Most of the people in charge of my "trial" were skeptical about this being my doing, but I was found guilty, but they were lenient, I couldn't serve on a starship for a year after I graduated, and no holodeck privlages during whatever position I got before the year was up. Obiko: Looks like you've had a string of bad luck, kid. Logalot: *Sigh* Yeah, I hope this assignment treats me well... Obiko was about to say something when his combadge beeped, someone spoke to him through it, but Logalot couldn't hear any of the conversation. Obiko finished talking and turned to Logalot. Obiko: I must go, I hope you enjoy your stay on the Serenity. With that he hurried out of the mess hall. OFF: Was that okay? I think I did everything alright... Rebbeca: Ok The program loads with state of the art computers for an ops base Ensign Kim: Run the data through see if you can find the location where the freedom crashed. Rebbeca: ok... doing so now Kim: Try and find out where and how the fault occured Rebbeca: Yes... sir we need another officer.. The small bridge area was dark, with the lighting and emergency lighting offline, and most consoles offline. One console however was flashing on and off, just with enough power flashing through it to function. The captain's leg was bleeding badly, and he was losing a lot of blood. He wouldn't survive for more than a few days if it wasnt stopped. On the good hand, the captain was a trained doctor, and could treat it. On the other hand, there was no proper medical equipment. He tore the sleeve off of his uniform, and tied it tightly around the wound to stop the bleeding. It worked, but wasnt a very effective solution. Stepping over to the console, he tapped a few buttons, and a damage report came up, it wasnt good. Hull breach in the aft section. Main power offline, warp and impulse drives destroyed, life support minimal....... and sensors destroyed: There no way to tell where he was without sensors, and no way to get home without warp. "Oh crap. Now what am I supposed to do?!" His mind just kept playing out possible scenarios of what happened to his captain. With this active of a mind, it would be a while before he would see any sleep. At that moment, Flix started to feel a tingling sensation. It started with the left side of his body, the side closest to the wall, and spread to his right. Just as he was about to call sickbay, he noticed the wall was glowing, the intensity rising fast. A moment later, what could only be described as a cloud of orange and blue light came through the wall. Flix immediatly dove out of his bed and reached for his tricorder. By the time he had opened it, the cloud had moved through the opposite wall and dissapeared. Flix ran out the door without bothering to dress.* <<Constellation Lounge>> *Luke and Sporto were having a drink in the Constellation Lounge after their shifts ended. They were sharing childhood experiences and the destruction of Sporto's parent's pool with the use of dry ice bombs. They were deep in conversation when a half naked Flix ran in the door with a tricorder. Everyone in the room immediately stopped talking and stared at the unusual sight. Flix wasn't even paying attention to the looks he was recieving. He was too busy scanning the room with his tricorder. Sporto decided to speak up.* Sporto: "Flix, ummm, what are you doing?" *Flix just ignored him* Sporto: "Lt, what is going on?" (in a more authoritive voice) Flix: "It's not here!" Sporto: "What's not here?" Flix: I don't know, some kind of subspace phenomonom. It passed through my quarters but it didn't come this way." Sporto: "Then where did it go?" Flix: "Hold on......Got it! It's heading aft and down." *With that, Flix ran out of the room. Sporto and Luke looked at eachother, shrugged, and ran after him. They caught Flix as he was getting into the turbolift. They went down a couple of decks. The door opened right as the cloud passed through the ceiling. The three of them watched in awe as the cloud traveled down the hallway towards the floor in a constant 45 degree angle. A second later, the cloud had dissapeared into the floor.* Luke: "That was amazing!" Flix: "It was brighter than before, and it's moving faster." Sporto: "Moving towards what?" Flix: "Towards the warp core. It's on a beeline for engineering." Sporto: (To the computer) "Main engineering." *The lift went into action.* Sporto: "=^= Sporto to Scooter." Scooter: +Scooter here.+ Sporto: +There's some kind of subspace anomaly heading through the ship towards the warp core.+ Scooter: +What will it do?+ Sporto: +We don't know, but I'd recommend yellow alert right now.+ Scooter: +Acknowledged. Scooter out.+ *The turbolift doors opened to an alerted engineering. None of the engineers on duty knew what was hapening, just that a yellow alert had been called.* Sporto: "People, we've got some kind of anomaly headed our way and we don't know what it'll do. Just be rea....." *The room suddenly exploded with light. The cloud was now bright enough to blind all those who looked at it and traveling fast enough to make it from the wall to the core in about a second. The cloud impacted the core, or rather, it just passed through the thick case and stopped inside. The steady blue light traveling up and down the transparent portions of the case immediately became a distorted greenish color. That wasn't all that had changed. The deck started to shudder violently almost in sych with the red klaxons going off. All those crewmembers who didn't have a solid footing stumbled. Crewman Christine McLean shouted from the second story of engineering.* McLean: "The core pressure is rising! We're losing containment!" Sporto: "Underhill, divert all extra power to containment! Luke, I know you're not trained for this, but grab a plasma torch and help Heywood reinforce the main antimatter conduits!" Underhill: "Power diverted. That thing is attraced to the core, we need to get it out!" Sporto: "Flix, how can we repel it?" Flix: (scanning) "It appears to exist in between normal space and subspace, which might be a clue to Simmo's whereabouts." *A panel on the second floor exploded, sending Crewman McLean flying off the the catwalk. She landed right at Sporto's feet, unconsious and badly hurt.* Underhill: +=^= Medical emergency, main engineering!+ Sporto: "That's great Flix, but how do get rid of it?" Flix: "It appears to be a remenant of the quantum string that was pushed into subspace but is now starting to reappear back into normal space. We might be able to push it back into subspace, at least temporarily, with a widely dispersed phased energy beam." *Sporto ran over to Luke, who looked out of place sitting on top of the energy conduits trying to help Petty Officer Heywood hold the plasma torch still amongst the violently shaking ship.* Sporto: "Luke, give me your phaser!" *Luke took his phaser out of it's holster and threw it down to Sporto, who caught it and set it to stun but with a wide dispersion angle. He fired, the beam seemingly light compared to the string remament stuck in the core. The beam got brighter however. Actually it didn't, but it appeared to be so because the light from the remanent was dimming. In a matter of seconds, it had dissapeared altogether, as had the shaking.* Sporto: +=^= Sporto to Scooter, we're okay now, but I suggest that you back us away from where the string used to be.+ Scooter: +We'll do that right away. I'm calling a senior staff meeting in 1 hour. I want a full report then.+ Sporto: +Yes, sir. Sporto out.+ *Sporto walked over to the unconcious McLean, who was being checked out by a medical team. Once he made sure that she'd be okay, Sporto found Luke, who was just climbing down from the conduit.* Sporto: (To Luke) "So, shall we finish those drinks?" OFF: (Meeting next? ON: <Somewhere> By the dim light coming from the console, Simmo managed to pull a panel off the wall and took out a Starfleet standard-issue flashlight. He took a look around the bridge and saw a lot of debris. Refocusing himself, he turned his attention back to the console. Auxilary power was low, but there was enough to work with. OFF: Captain of the USS Serenity

But it might take years before i can find it with this power output. 1 hour later... Kim was still working way on his own with the trace now still only searching through the Alpha Quadrant... at very slow speeds only searched 100 light years... Suddenly the cloud reacted with the warp core Kim: Huh, what is happening? Screens of data were coming much faster. He was searching about 10 times faster than normal... It searched the whole alpha and some of the gamma and beta quadrants (only a small bit of them)... Kim: wow... the surge ended... +Kim to bridge... what happened?+ +Bridge, a wierd onemeli just passed the warp core... everything shoudl be fine+ +Kim, it boosted my searching by over 100 percent... I think I might be able to locate the Freedom+ He started to work very fast and quickly he worked out that the ship was not in the Alpha Quadrant or the explored area of the beta quadrant. He quickly called Torres Torres: Can you send me this data? Kim: Yeah. I think we may have found it... Torres: Dont get excited we still have locate the actual sector and get in contact with them. Simmo666 Rear Admiral Posts: 4620 Join Date: 12-01-2002 Posted at 6:35 pm, 2nd October 2002 OFF: Good job there was a meeting there Kim, we've got little kids here, Carlos might not like it ON: <Waverider Shuttle, Somewhere> Simmo had gotten a flashlight out from the panel on the wall, and began to look around the wreck that was the Waverider bridge. The commodore had wanted to be alone away from the ship on the Waverider ever since he saw the ship. But now, these weren't ideal circumstances. He wandered down out of the door at the back of the bridge. It was a short walk to the next door, labeled VIP quarters. The door was lying on the floor, about 10 meters from the doorway it should be in however. And in turn the doorway was lying on the floor blocking the door to more quarters. "Great, that's going to take a lot of work to fix. Unlucky Sporto." Pausing for a moment, he realised what he'd said. Would he ever see Sporto again? For that matter, would he see anyone again. He had been at his console on the bridge for hours, even after his shift ended. He had downloaded all the data he had collected on the cloud thing from his tricorder, then compiled all data from the internal sensors, then cross-referenced it with all historical data reguarding this type of phenomenon. So far, he had no luck in figuring out what it was. He was annoyed, something was flying around in the back of his head, he just couldn't figure out what it was.* *Crewman Camacho was sitting at the Ops station observing Flix's frustration.* Camacho: "Sir, your shift ended two hours ago, you should take a break." Flix: "Not just yet Camacho, something about this feels familiar, I just don't know what it is." Camacho: "In situations like that, I find that if I take a break, have a drink, and just relax for a minute, the answer just comes to me." *Flix considered it* Flix: "Actually, I could use a cup of coffee right now, don't want to be falling asleep." *Flix left the bridge and took the turbolift down one deck to the Lounge. The parting doors revealed it to be fairly empty, but considering it was 0120 hours (Sporto's time of writing this ), that was no surprise. Flix went over to a replicator, ordered a cup of coffee, and took a seat at a table. After a sip or two, he looked out the massive widows looking towards the front of the ship. This view revealed nothing but an empty starfield, so Flix directed his attention around the room. On the opposite wall, Flix saw the large painting that decorated most of the back wall, hand painted by one of the civilians on board. The painting featured the Serenity traveling at high warp, the blue light from the warp nacelles "smeared" back to accentuate the fact that the ship was actually moving faster than light as she plowed through subspace. With that thought, the answer hit Flix like lightning.* Flix: (shouting to no one in particular) "That's it!". *The people in the lounge looked at him strangly as this was the second time he had made a scene in the messhall. Once again, Flix didn't care too much. He simply ran out of the room. On his way to the turbolift, he hit a panel on the wall.* Flix: "Computer, locate Sporto." Computer: "Commander Sporto is in Deflector Control." *Flix stepped into the turbolift.* <<Deflector Control>> *Sporto was in the jeffries tube that connected to Deflector Control. He had his engineering kit propped up next to him as he searched for burnt out power nodes. His hands were oily from cleaning up a ruptured gel pack from the adjacent access conduit. When the surge from the string hit the deflector, the massive charge swept through the deflector nodes and into the mentioned gel pack, which promptly exploded all over the place, creating quite a mess. The good news about it however, was the fact that that gel pack had stopped the surge from frying half a dozen vital nodes, or even worse, and EPS conduit. With that thought in mind, Sporto replaced the last destroyed node in the section and yelled down the tube to McLean, who was cleaning up the control room.* Sporto: "Ok, bring node E-24 online." McLean: "Okay." *The node wirred to life, the pale light from the circuitry lighting up Sporto's dirty face. Sporto scanned the node with his tricorder. Satisfied with the results, he replaced the cover hatch and packed up his kit. By the time he had crawled back into the control room, Sporto saw Flix enter the room.* Sporto: "Lt. What can I do for you?" Flix: "I had an idea concerning Simmo's whereabouts." Sporto: "Go on." *Flix explained his idea to Sporto. Then they discussed the engineering physics behind it. By the end of their discussion, Sporto was just as convinced as Flix.* Sporto: "Come on, we'd better go tell Scooter about this." <<Ready Room>> *Scooter felt strange, almost bad, about sitting in Simmo's chair in his ready room. Fortunately, he didn't have much time to worry about it. The door buzzer rang.* Scooter: "Come in." *Sporto and Flix entered the room.* Scooter: "What's going on gentlemen?" Flix: "We had an idea about Simmo. That cloud we encountered was unlike anything we, or anyone, has ever encountered. I couldn't find any references to anything like it anywhere in our database. But there was still something bothering me about it. Something important. It wasn't until I saw a painting that I figured out what it was. The cloud was existing partially in space, and partially in subspace." Sporto: "As you know, to travel at warp speeds, ships leave normal space and enter subspace, where the Law of Realtivity doesn't apply. To get there, ships create a warp field and accelerate to a certain speed, where a conduit bridging normal space with subspace opens (the flash of light seen when ships go to warp). The ship travels through that conduit, which then closes, and the ship can continue to accelerate. Flix showed me the data from the string, and if studied closly, it resembles a rough warp field. We believe the string was a natural conduit leading to subspace. It has all the necessary features for a conduit." Scooter: "Then when it closed, what happened?" Sporto: "As time went on before the string dissapeared, the warp field was slowly forming. Once it got the the minimum conformity, the conduit closed. Sir, we believe the warp field is fully matured, existing in subspace right beside us. We also believe that that's where Simmo is now." Scooter: "What was the cloud?" Flix: "The warp field must be decaying, sending energy ripples back into normal space. However, if a warp field collapses uncontrolled as this one appears to be doing, it will be dangerous and almost certainly fatal for all ships encompassed by it. Assuming Simmo's still alive, he might not have much time left." Scooter: "How much time does he have?" Flix: "I can't tell, but the rate of the appearance of the clouds is increasing exponentially, so not much, maybe a day or two." Scooter: "Okay, so how do we get to him?" *Sporto and Flix looked at each other.* Flix: "That we're also not sure of, but we'll keep working on it." Scooter: "Very well, make it your top priority. When they were finished, they used the antigrav pads to move the probe to the loading rack. Flix: "24 minutes until the warp field collapses." Scooter: "Very well. Manhunter, fire." *The probe shot out of the launcher and flew towards the former position of the string. Just then, Sporto and kim entered the room and took their stations.* Kim: "Receiving telemetry. The probe isn't picking anything up yet....wait a second, I'm picking up a faint signal. It appears to be the emergency beacon from a starfleet shuttlecraft. I can barely hear it." Sporto: "Sir, emergency beacons are built to get a strong signal out to anyone who's listening. Considering we can barely hear it now, there's no way we'd ever hear anything from a normal comm system." Scooter: "Suggestions?" Sporto: "That probe has a small warp engine on it for long range surveys. We can remotely configure it to activate the engine and use it to boost the signal receivers." Scooter: "Do it." Sporto: "Aye sir." *Sporto pushed some buttons on his console.* Sporto: "Warp engines active." Kim: "The signal's getting stronger." Flix: "Sir, there's some sort of surge building near the probe!" Scooter: "Helm, back us off!" *A flash of light enveloped the probe. To everyone on the bridge, it appeared that the string was back.* Kim: "The signal increased by 700%! The probes spatial sensors are working as well. Reading two ships, a shuttlecraft and the waverider. Both seem to be heavily damaged......" Flix: "The conduit is destabalizing!" Sporto: "The probe is being pulled in!" *The bright light filling the viewscreen suddenly dissapeared, as did the probe. The ship rocked slightly from the shockwave, the inertial dampners absorbing most of the force.* Scooter: "Report!" Kim: "I've lost all telemetry from the probe. It's gone." Scooter: Damn! Kim: "Sir, the last thing I got from the probe was a reading of the field. It appears that the field has stablized a bit. It's still collapsing, but it appears to be happening at a much slower rate than before. I estimate that we now have 13.4 hours until collapse." Scooter: "How did that happen?" Sporto: "Sir, the probe's warp core is online. We just added a controlled warp field to the unstable one. It's very likely that that core is acting as a brace, helping to stabilize the field it's trapped in. But it's not big or powerful enough to keep the field going forever. But we've bought both ourselves and our people trapped in the field more time. <<Meanwhile, on the Waverider>> *Simmo woke up on the floor in the middle of the cramped corridor. His head hurt, and justly so. The last thing he remembered was a flash of extremely bright light, then the waverider shook harder than he thought it could take. In the melee, Simmo was thrown against the bulkhead. That was the last thing he remembered. He got up from the floor and looked around him. He was startled to see a huge object sticking out of the wall separating the small VIP quarters from the corridor he was standing in. It looked as if it had been beamed directly into the wall. Upon closer inspection, Simmo realized the object was in fact a multispatial probe. They were one of Sporto's newest toys, as he had been told. Simmo remembered having dinner one night with Sporto in the Constellation lounge. Sporto was very excited about the new equipment, which Simmo knew due to the fact that Sporto had spent half the conversation telling him all about them. That's when Simmo realized what this oversized probe was doing here. It was the Serenity's attempt to contact him. Simmo intended to reply. He pried off the nose cover, noting the pulsing sound from the probe's active miniature warp core. The cover came off realitivly easily. However, Simmo was dismayed to learn that the sensitive equipment in the nose was damaged, and he had no idea of how to fix it. Although, if he could wake Solan......* *He quickly went to the sickbay* OFF: Sorry if this post isn't as good as my others. We managed to stablize the field, but we only have 13 hours until it collapses completely." Admiral: "I'm counting on you and your crew to get them back." Scooter: "We won't let you down, sir." Admiral: "Starfleet out." Scooter leaned back in his chair. He couldn't remember how long he'd been on duty. He needed rest, but Obiko wasn't here to order him off the bridge. Scooter looked forward to being a captain some day, but not like this. He headed back out onto the bridge and watched eagerly as the crew worked hard to get Simmo back. Logalot: Well, we have to do something, maybe we can create some kind of special dampening field to disable the effect. Opell: We might be able to devise a plan to discover the way things are being pulled in, the Serenity reported that it was some kind of dimensional rift... Obiko: Here's a long range scan, you can see the "hole" in space right... here. Logalot: What can we do about it? Can we destabalize it? Obiko: Maybe, hold on. Obiko hits some buttons and a very sleep deprived Sporto appears on screen. Sporto: What? I'm busy! Obiko: Look, we just want to know what firing a photon torpedo into an opening to the rift might do... Sporto: If you hit the rim... It should be fine, but that's taking a chance. They had been so occupied with simply contacting the waverider that they had completely forgotten the part about rescuing them. Now they sat at the pool table in engineering trying to figure out a way, something they had overlooked. Sporto thought about his captain, wondering if he would ever see him again. As Sporto was deep in thought, Kim threw out another suggestion.* Kim: "What about a tachyon burst? If we went to warp and emitted a condensed stream of tachyons right as we passed by the warp field they're trapped in, it might open up the conduit and literally spit them back out into normal space." Sporto: "That would work....if they had a velocity over warp 1. The tachyons only collapse the warp field, it's the velocity that ejects the ship out of the conduit. Using tachyons on the field will only collapse it, which is exactly what we're trying to prevent." Kim: "How much time do we have left?" Sporto: "3 hours, 23 minutes." Kim: "Slowly running out." *Sporto went back into his dreary thoughts. He was fresh out of ideas. In his mind, there was nothing that could be done. But he shrugged it off, there HAD to be a solution. Every problem has a solution. Sporto glanced around the room, but not really seeing any of it. That is, until he saw the Crewman McLean working at one of the many control stations on the floor level of engineering. She was running a routine diagnostic on the warp engines, the simulated results of the Serenity at warp flashed at her. She was in the part of the diagnostic where the ship simulated dropping to impulse. Sporto knew every physical step the computer performed to do so by heart. It was an ingenious system really, very hard to believe that any process so sophisticated could be developed, no matter how much time was given. Some of the things involved in warp theory often drew the question "Who, when, and how did anyone ever think of that?". Though complicated, the modern warp control systems made such a process seem so simple, smooth. It was no big deal for the systems monitoring a warp core to create and dissipate a warp field with such ease. To bad there was no system controlling the warp field that Simmo and the others were trapped in.* *Right there and then, the answer hit Sporto like a photon torpedo.* Sporto: "Kim! I think I've figured it out!" Kim: "What?" Sporto: "In all of our brainstorming, what variable have we always held constant?" Kim: "Ummm, I don't know." Sporto: "This whole time, we've been trying to figure out a way to fix the problem from out here. We've never even considered any way for Simmo and the others to do anything from the inside." Kim: "You're right! But what's your plan?" Sporto: "That probe we sent in managed to stabalize the warp field at least temporarily. Now that core is a miniature version, putting out barely enough to maintain a stable warp field for itself, much less hold together the entire field that it's trapped in. However, if Simmo gets the warp core on the waverider online again, it should be large enough to hold the field together, and if all goes well, control it to a stable collapse." Kim: "We need to get to the bridge." *They run to the turbolift and go to the bridge. Upon exiting the lift, Sporto and Kim saw Scooter sitting in the captain's chair, looking bored.* Scooter: "You two look like you've got something." Sporto: "Yes, but we need to talk to Simmo right away." Scooter: "Very well, Flix, get Simmo on the line now." *Simmo's voice crackled into existence.* Simmo: "I hear you Serenity, what's going on?" Sporto: "Sir, we think we've found a way out, however, you're going to have to do it yourself." Simmo: "I'm listening." Sporto: "You have to get your warp core online ASAP." Simmo: "Commander, we've been trying to do just that since we've gotten here. We just don't have what we need to fix it, even after cannibalizing the shuttle." Kim: "Damn." Sporto: "Wait, I think we can get spare parts to you." Simmo: "How?" Sporto: "The same way we got the probe to you. We reinforce a shuttle pod and fill it up with whatever you need. Then we send it to the spot that the probe was sucked in." Simmo: "Sounds like a plan, I'll get a list to you in about ten minutes." Sporto: "I'll get to work on the pod, Serenity out." <<Shuttle Bay, An Hour Later>> *Sporto and the other engineers had reinforced a shuttle pod and were just finishing loading it with all the supplies that Simmo had requested, plus a few more, when Scooter entered the bay.* Scooter: "We're running out of time. How much longer until we're ready?" Sporto: "A matter of minutes, we're just loading the last few containers now." Scooter: "Good." Sporto: *After a pause* "Sir, requesting to go with the pod." Scooter: "Denied." Sporto: "But sir, we don't have much time left and if I'm there, the repairs will be finished a lot sooner." Scooter: "They've got Solan with them. Your own personel reports indicated that Solan is a very competant engineer." Sporto: "It's not that sir, it's that I hate just having to sit here and do nothing, hoping they can get out themselves." Scooter: "I know Commander, I feel the same way, but I will not risk the life of another of my crew." *The engineers finished loading up the shuttle pod.* Sporto: "That's it sir, she's ready." Scooter: "Very well, launch her." *Sporto pressed some buttons on the control console and the bay doors opened, the shimmering forcefield preventing the air from escaping into the cold depths of space. Once the doors were fully opened, the shuttle pod lifted off the deck and glided gracefully out the door, being pulled by the tractor beams. Once the pod was clear of the ship, the beams disengaged, and the shuttle lurched forward under it own power, being controlled by whoever was at the helm station on the bridge. The Serenity just happened to be orientated correctly, so that the crew in the bay could see the conduit open and the pod dissapear just before the massive bay doors shut, obscuring their view.* OFF: Ahh, one of those times that I have no idea what I'm going to write when I start but am inspired as I'm writing. McFarland: "Incoming message from the Waverider." Scooter: "On screen!" Simmo: +We've got the warp core put back together. We're going to try bring it online now.+ Scooter: "We'll be here waiting for you." Simmo: +Waverider out.+ <Waverider> Solan: "Opening deuterium valves." Parker: "Power transfer conduit is ready." Simmo: "Ok, let's bring the reactant injectors online." Solan: "We will have to activate them both at the same time to get a proper reaction." Simmo: "On the count of three. 1... 2..." Parker: "Wait! Do we do it when you say three? Or do you say three and then we do it?" Simmo: "When I say three. Ready? 1... 2... 3!" Solan: "Lieutenant Parker activated the matter injector slightly earlier than Commodore Simmo activated the antimatter injector. I am realigning the phase adjustment coil to compensate." <Serenity bridge, 10 minutes remaining> Now Sporto had begun pacing opposite of Scooter, such that they passed each other halfway each time. Sporto: "What's taking so long? They should have been done by now." Manhunter: "Yeah, it sucks waiting, but there's nothing else we can do." FliX: "Sir! The field is starting to collapse!" Scooter: "They still have 10 minutes." FliX: "I'm detecting a matter/antimatter reaction from inside the field. The warp field is dissipating." On the viewscreen, it looked as if space itself was changing shape. A flash of bright light filled the viewscreen, to be replaced by the Waverider and two shuttles. Simmo: +Requesting permission to dock.+ Scooter: "Granted." The Waverider was secured in it's special place on the bottom of the saucer. Solan and Parker returned to engineering, and Simmo took a turbolift to the bridge. Manhunter: "Commodore on the bridge!" After that, Simmo's ears were assaulted with several voices saying things like, "Welcome back sir, good to see you again sir, glad you made it sir," and other various remarks, but they were all being said at the same time. Simmo had gotten use to being by himself. Simmo: "It's good to be back." Scooter: "Transfer all command codes to Commodore Simmo. Authorization Scooter Omega Three." Computer: "Command codes transferred." Sporto stood up to let Scooter move to the first officer's chair so that Simmo could sit in the captain's chair. Simmo: "Would Captain Scooter care to do the honors?" Scooter: "Thank you sir. Helm, set course for Jupiter Station, maximum warp." Daniels: "Course laid in." Scooter: "Engage!" ON: Simmo was back onboard the Serenity, it was good to be back. It was much more hospitable now, rather than the tattered wreck of the Waverider. He could so nearly have been killed many times on that ship. However, the crew risked a lot trying to get him back, and he owed them big. This was one of, if not the finest crew in the fleet. Stepping onto the bridge, Commodore Simmo felt at home, he was back, back where he belonged. Sitting down in the centre chair he looked around. The senior officers looked at him, they were glad to have him back just as much as he was glad to be there. Simmo: Crew, I think its time we got out of here. Lieutenant Daniels, lay in course for Risa. Daniels: Risa sir? Simmo: I've spoke to Starfleet Operations, and they agree we all need a break. Kim: Too bad I'm staying behind. Scooter: You'll miss some great fun on Risa. Kim: I know. Simmo: Better get moving, or we'll leave with you. Kim: Thankyou sir, see you soon. Simmo: Bye. *Kim leaves the bridge* <A few minutes later> FliX: Sir, Lieutenant Kim has left the ship, and we have all our crew onboard. Simmo: Good. Helm, Engage! This was a rather bittersweet event, he had never been on an exciting post, just at starbases. He was hoping to have some active duty, but then he was left at Jupiter Station, and now he's on shoreleave in Risa? He should be happy that for the next few months he would be in Vacation Wonderland, but he wasn't. As his mind refocussed, he found that he had burned part of the board with a welder while he was thinking. Logalot: Grr... Now I'll have to start over again... Just then, a young female officer walked up to his station and tapped him on the shoulder. Officer: You know, you don't have to start a new one, look, you can just detatch this section. Logalot: Oh! But then when he was looking at the rather spacial features near and around Risa he found this Training School. *Thinking To Himself* Daniels: Hmm... The Risan Moon: School of Piloting. The course supposedly makes you more aware of your enemys movement and how to make close calls when in tight asteroid fields. Interesting. And it's only a lightyear or two out from Risa in a nebula, and also happens to be a little off course from our trip to Risa. ON: *The line of people waiting for the transporter was so long that it stretched all the way out of the transporter room and halfway around the deck. People were getting impatient. It wasn't often that they got to have shore leave on the planet nicknamed the "Vacation Planet". As everyone stood there waiting, Sporto walked right past them, all the way to the front of the line. He was carrying 2 large engineering kits. He strolled over to the operator.* Operator: "Hello sir, what can I do for you?" Sporto: "There's been some kind of trouble on the surface. They need an engineer down there to help them." Operator: "Don't they have their own?" Sporto: "Yes, but they've decided to ask for the resources and experience of a starfleet engineering crew. So I've volunteered so my staff can go on leave." Operator: "That's very kind of you sir." Sporto: "I know. Anyway, they want me down there right away. Manhunter was still on the serenity so he went and packed and while he was in the coradors there was nobody there so hey might as well run like crazy! so he went to his quarters and packed then went into the lineup to go to the planet but it was still very long so he got the same idea as Luke and went to engineering and went to the planet and when he got down there he ran into Luke snaping some pics with his camera so he went with logalot and luke. He grabbed the best shuttle there was: Type 11. Considering that he was learning to fly to close objects the type 11 could have better maneuvering abilities. Plus, he thought it would be nice to have the best sensors thinking that that would be what he would need to detect his enemies. Daniels: I'll see you guys later. But since this is shorleave i should be lazy and rest. Computer! *BLEEP* Daniels: Set a course, heading 29 52 mark 7. Warp 7 *BLOOP BLEE BLOOP* Daniels in his rather captain attitude: ENGAGE! TITLE: The reason the Freedom is gone The USS Freedom used Advanced warp engines. These new prototypes were extremely unstable. When the shapeshifter fired at Ens. Luke the flashback hit the backup warp field stabalizer. When the Freedom reached maximum velocity its warp field imploded. With a standard federation engine this would be caught and restabilized but the backup warp field stabalizer was damaged. The field imploded and exploded in a advanced warp shockwave. This created a "pocket" in subspace. The pocket began leaking out via the quantum filiment. The extream stress sent the Freedom hurtling away at extreme velocity. When the advanced warp core which gave the subspace pocket stability was destroyed it started to destabilize. The other warp cores could only stablize it a tiny bit because it needed an advanced warp core. The incident with the Freedom was initially investigated by the USS Peridote. The Peridotes Chief Science Officer is transferring to the command of Commadore Simmo now.
